HomeLanDS is a popular single-player game for Windows PCs where players assume the role of a town's mayor and begin building their village from scratch. The exploit for this PC game is called "HLDS exploit 1.7". HomeLanDScaped is an online gaming community, which has taken it's passion for . HLDS to creating an online community for HomeLanDS, similar to other popular gaming communities like Garry's Mod (GMod) and Team Fortress 2 (Tf2). On their website, they state that "HLDS is a great game. Unfortunately, it has few users in its native LAN environment. This community is meant to bring together people interested in HLDS in the same way that the original developers tried to do." The hacking group hacking-team.org states "HLDS does support multiplayer via TCP/IP so it doesn't have security issues because of being single player. However, its marketplace page for registered users does not have keyed auth implemented. Thus anyone can register a user account to your LAN and steal your goods without a second thought." Due to this vulnerability, a HomeLanDScaped forum was created by the hacking group. The hacking group installed an unauthorized third-party script on the forum that allows users of the forum to register themselves as new users on the HomeLanDS server. Those who use this exploit can then forge accounts, which would allow them to do things like transfer wealth between users, modify account information, buy/sell items from other players, upload custom maps to their account or change player information. If given access by people with malicious intent, registered accounts could also be used to commit acts of vandalism or theft against users of HomeLanDS. The HomeLanDS Homepage notes "This is a bug in the HLDS application that allows anyone to create a new account without authorization." It also states that this vulnerability "has been fixed in the current version of HLDS" and advises users to update their client. There is a thread on the OPL forums where a user reported getting an error message. The thread was titled "HLDS is vulnerable." As of May 16, 2011, there has been no official statement from the HomeLanDScaped forum staff regarding this exploit or response to this issue. What follows is a step-by-step process on how to use the exploit. Step 1: Download the exploit files onto your computer. Extract the files into their own folder.
